Ferry to Koh Tao, made simple

Getting a ferry to Koh Tao in 2026 is straightforward once you know two things, which mainland pier you start from and which operator actually runs that day. Most travellers pay too much because they book at the first desk they see in Bangkok or on Khao San Road. This guide strips out the markups.

All boats arrive at the same place, Mae Haad pier on the west side of the island. From there you are a 5-minute songthaew ride from Sairee, or 15 minutes from the quieter south bays. Prices below are from fares in Thai baht, booked direct or through 12Go. Walk-up at the pier is sometimes cheaper by a small margin, but sold-out days are common from December through March.

Section 01

Which route should you take?

Four origins cover almost every arrival. Pick by where you are, not by brand loyalty. On any morning a different operator may be faster, cheaper, or the only one running.

From Chumphon
Mainland rail hub, 1.5 to 2 hours by high-speed catamaran. Fastest way from Bangkok via overnight train + ferry combo. Piers used, Tung Makham Noi (Lomprayah, Songserm) and Matapon (Seatran Discovery).
From Surat Thani
Mainland airport hub, 3.5 to 4 hours via Donsak to Koh Tao. Useful if you fly into Surat Thani (URT). Slower, typically cheaper than Chumphon.
From Koh Samui
Big island to the south, 1.5 to 2 hours. Most common inter-island arrival if you fly into Samui (USM). Pier, Nathon or Maenam depending on operator.
From Koh Phangan
Full Moon island, 1 to 1.5 hours. Easiest transfer from Thong Sala pier after a party stretch. Frequent departures in high season.

The three operators that matter

Ignore the signs in Khao San. On the water, three companies move almost everyone to Mae Haad. Each handles weather differently, and each has a luggage policy that catches first-timers out.

Operator 01 / 03

Lomprayah

Best for fastest Chumphon crossing, well-maintained catamarans, predictable schedules. Runs the combined bus + ferry package from Bangkok that most backpackers use.

Trade-off, the strictest luggage policy on the route. 20 kg included. Excess charged at 200 THB per extra 10 kg or part thereof. Oversize bags weighed at check-in, not negotiable.

Best for: smooth crossings, monsoon-month reliability, Bangkok bundle bookings.

Operator 02 / 03

Seatran Discovery

Slightly cheaper than Lomprayah on the Chumphon route, good when Lomprayah is sold out. Departs from Matapon pier (different from Lomprayah’s Tung Makham Noi, triple-check your ticket).

Comfort is comparable. Schedules are a little less frequent. The morning sailing is the safest bet in shoulder season.

Best for: shoulder-season Chumphon, when Lomprayah is full.

Operator 03 / 03

Songserm

Best for budget travellers with time to spare. Runs a slower express boat, typically 2.5 to 3 hours from Chumphon at a lower fare than the catamarans.

Trade-off, rougher ride in any swell. Skip it in the November to December monsoon window unless you have cast-iron sea legs.

Best for: lowest-fare Chumphon, calm-sea months, story-collecting travellers.

Luggage rule to remember, all three operators cap free luggage at 20 kg. Lomprayah enforces the 200 THB overage fee most strictly. Island-hopping with a long-haul backpack plus dive gear, assume you will pay it and build it into your budget.

Fares & crossing times

From-fares in THB, booked direct or on 12Go. Prices drift 10 to 15% by season and weekday. High-season premium runs roughly mid-December to end of February.

Section 04

Monsoon & sea conditions

Koh Tao sits in the Gulf of Thailand, which means the rough months are the opposite of the Andaman side. Plan accordingly. A cancelled ferry can lose you a day of a short trip.

High Season
Mid-December to March. Calmest sea, fullest boats, highest fares. Book 24 to 48 hours ahead in peak weeks.
Shoulder
April to June and September to October. Mixed weather, short squalls, mostly normal schedules.
Monsoon
November to mid-December. Biggest cancellation risk. Lomprayah typically runs when others do not, worth the premium in this window.
If your ferry is cancelled, operators reissue onto the next running service the same day or the following morning, free of charge. Hold your ticket, do not rebook elsewhere in panic. 12Go handles rebooking automatically through the app.
Section 05

Six tips from the pier

Small things that save real money or real time. Or a missed boat.

Book direction, not brand

Compare all three operators on the route you actually need. Loyalty to one brand costs you money three days out of ten.

Arrive 45 minutes early

Check-in queues build fast at Chumphon and Donsak in high season. 45 minutes is comfortable, 30 is tight, 15 is a gamble.

Weigh your bag at the hotel

20 kg is the magic number. Repack a dry bag of books or dive gear into your day pack before the counter and you will save 200 THB.

Take dramamine 30 minutes out

Even the catamarans roll in a swell. Cheap at any 7-Eleven on the mainland. Night ferries in particular.

Skip the night boat unless budget-first

The Chumphon night ferry is a local cargo experience, around six hours, wooden bunks, basic. Half the price, twice the story. Know what you are booking.

Onward to Nang Yuan is separate

Mae Haad to Koh Nang Yuan is a different longtail boat, booked on the day at the north end of Sairee or through your dive school. Not bundled with any ferry.

Frequently asked questions

The questions travellers actually ask us before booking.

How long is the ferry from Chumphon to Koh Tao?
About 1 hour 45 minutes on the Lomprayah high-speed catamaran, 1 hour 50 minutes with Seatran Discovery, and up to 2.5 hours on the slower Songserm express boat. Add 45 minutes at the pier for check-in.
Which ferry from Bangkok to Koh Tao is best?
The overnight train to Chumphon plus the morning Lomprayah catamaran is the time-honoured combo, you sleep on the train and arrive in Koh Tao before lunch. Bus-and-ferry combos are cheaper but longer and less comfortable.
Is it safe to ferry to Koh Tao during monsoon season?
Generally yes. Operators cancel rather than sail into rough weather. November through mid-December is the riskiest window. Lomprayah runs more consistently than others in marginal conditions, so pay the small premium in monsoon months.
Do I need to book Koh Tao ferries in advance?
In high season (mid-December to February) book 24 to 48 hours ahead for morning departures. Off-peak, same-day at the pier is usually fine. 12Go holds live inventory across all three operators.
What happens if my Koh Tao ferry is cancelled?
Hold your ticket. Operators reissue you onto the next running service the same day or the following morning, free of charge. Do not pay for a new ticket elsewhere. If you booked on 12Go, rebooking is handled in the app.
Is there a night ferry to Koh Tao?
Yes. The Chumphon night boat runs roughly six hours on wooden bunks for around half the catamaran fare. A working cargo service with basic comforts. Book it as an experience, not as a reliable schedule.
